Today we’re taking a close up look at the Portofino Hand-Wound Big Date by IWC Schaffhausen. Available in white gold and red gold, the Portofino Hand-Wound Big Date is the newest addition to the Swiss manufacture’s Portofino collection.
The white gold model of the Portofino Hand-Wound Big Date features a slate-colored dial with rhodium-plated hands and indices, while the red gold version features a silver-plated dial with gold-plated hands and indices.
In 9 o’clock, you have the sub-dial that suggests the day, and at 3 o’clock you have the sub-dials that show the date and power reserve. At 6 o’clock, there’s a month indicator and moon phase display, and to the remaining at around 8 o’clock you’ve got the entire year index. Ultimately, there is the flying tourbillon that makes one rotation every second at 12 o’clock. The movement inside is your self-winding IWC caliber 51950, which is based upon the Caliber 51900 found in IWC’s additional tourbillon watches like the Portugieser Tourbillon Mystère Rétrograde however with the ingenious 82-part endless calendar module manufactured by Kurt Klaus. This motion also contains IWC’s Pellaton winding system also has a generous power book of 168 hours, or 7 days. It’s visible through a sapphire display caseback and features a unique commemorative 18k gold rotor. The other tourbillon see that IWC has specially prepared for its 150th anniversary is the Portugieser Constant-Force Tourbillon Edition “150 Years.” This comes in a slightly larger 46mm broad Portugieser style case and is only available in platinum. Water resistance is a just 30m, and the watch comes paired with a black alligator strap by Santoni. The Portugieser Constant-Force Tourbillon Edition “150 Years” includes a white lacquered dial with large black Arabic numerals printed in the signature font of IWC’s Portugieser watches. Like the earlier Portugieser Perpetual Calendar Tourbillon Edition “150 decades,” this view also offers heat-treated blue hour and minute hands. This is an upgraded version of previous Constant-Force Tourbillon watches — Portugieser along with other models — coupled with the “perpetual moon phase display.”
True to its name, the Portofino Hand-Wound Big Date features a big date display at 12 o’clock in large, highly legible figures. It also features a power reserve display. When fully wound, the new Portofino boasts a power reserve of 192 hours (8 days).
On the white gold version the Portofino Hand-Wound Big Date is completed by a black leather strap, while on the red gold version it is completed by a dark brown leather strap. Both versions feature the orange leather lining on the inner surface of the strap that is the trademark of its renowned manufacturer, the Italian company Santoni.
